This is a ‘W199’ Birch Armchair, designed by Walter Gropius and Ben Thompson for Thonet in 1951. It was produced in Austria in the early 1950s. Gropius was a co-founder of the Bauhaus school, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern architecture. The design features bent wood legs, along with bent supports for the armrests and back. The finish on this chair has achieved a beautiful aged patina, and we’ve left it untouched.

The armchair measures 21 inches deep, 25.5 inches wide, and is 29.5 inches high. The seat is 18 inches from the floor. It shows myriad signs of age and use, with some scratches and scuffs. Overall, this truly scarce chair is in very good condition. Please see photos.
